James Coffee Co.

Branding | Web Design

I follow a photographer by the name of Peter McKinnon on social media and he does promotional work with James Coffee Co., a premium coffee roaster in San Diego. When I lived in SD, I ended up trying their coffee and looking more into their brand and website. I liked the idea of their brand but felt like the presentation of their website needed a little love. I was inspired to create a personal project to address some of the branding and usability issues that I had encountered with their current site. My goal was to make the site more lively and contemporary while giving the customer a better user experience.

In addition to a new color palette, type system, and refreshed brand visuals, I addressed several issues throughout the redesign. One of the key features that I felt that the site’s users could benefit from was a product search filter. By adding a dynamic filter, the user now has the power to easily search for products based on the characteristics of each product without the cumbersome task of clicking each item and reviewing details. On their older website, the products were only images with hidden hover states which can become a little confusing as you navigate through the site. So I designed the thumbnail views of each product to include a title, price, and subtext without the need to hover over each image. Overall, it was a fun exercise in both branding and web, as well as a great opportunity to experiment and keep my skills sharp.
